I have all my Dells configured for OS Control. The performance can be configured for a few different presets through the BIOS under Power Management. The fan noise was nearly the same the entire testing session, at one point some of the fans bumped up to a 10k RPM per the iDRAC hardware monitoring, they died down after 6 seconds. I booted stresslinux over the iDRAC Virtual Media with the Java based console interface. If two PSUs are attached they will load balance but there will be about 15 additional watts of waste. If another PSU is added about ~15watts additional watts will be drawn. This is with one 502 watt PSU attached, a 80Plus Gold rated one. Not scientific I know, but tell me you didn't just scratch your arm.

I was able to hear the sound of scratching dry skin from across the room. Even with the fans going that fast the rack was still really quiet.

This was performed on this hardware configuration: I typically only turn that one on when I have something processor intensive to do and I plan to work from a different room.Īs for power draw (pulled from a previous post of mine):

However when I turn on my R610 with the X series 56xx Xeon, holy shit it's loud unbearable. The E series 56xx Xeons are marginally louder. In fact is quieter than my desktop in the same room which by no stretch is loud. On L series 56xx Xeons the R610 is really quiet. I don't buy their products, similar to how some refuse to shop at WalMart.Īs for noise, not that you asked. I will say I am entirely bias when it comes to HP. Some of Dell's RAID cards (SAS 6i/r) do use proprietary connectors but their backplanes use standard SFF8087 SAS connectors. This is true with all the servers brands I've touched.

The R610 is a 11G.Īs for quirks, Dells can be temperamental when it comes to changing RAM configuration, but as long as you follow the instructions on the inside panel everything will install nicely. The 11 generation Dells do not have licensing requirement for the iDRAC, it's entirely hardware dependent functionality. Because iLo has been mention: for $22 you can buy an iDRAC enterprise card and have a remote console interface through Java on a dedicated Ethernet port. I have 4x R610s in my lab, obviously I like them. r/HomeNetworking - Simpler networking advice. r/pfsense - for all things pfsense ('nix firewall) Might be able to find things useful for a lab. r/hardwareswap - Used hardware, swap hardware.
